Mystery Status: Unsolved
 The Monster is one of the biggest mysteries on the island. It was first heard by the survivors on their very first night on the island, and it has also been referred to as The Security System, and possibly Cerberus.
Things You Should Know About:
- It killed the Pilot
- Locke was the first to see it, and live, though he has told no one.
- Eko and Charlie have also seen it.
- Its nature is unknown
- It has appeared as a black smoke of some kind.
- During Eko’s encounter with the smoke, images from his past were seen.
- Its sounds are part mechanical and part beast sounding.
- Rose seems to think the sound it makes is familiar to her.

Season 1
During the first season, the Monster was heard on the very first night by all of the survivors, and the next morning Rose commented on how familiar the noises sounded. After Kate, Jack, and Charlie ventured into the jungle and found the cockpit of the plane, the monster appeared and grabbed the pilot, though nobody was able to see the monster. Jack later commented that it was right behind him. The pilot was killed and found high at the top of a tree, soaked in his own blood.
Later, in the Walkabout episode, Locke is confronted by the Monster but not killed. He claims that he did not see it, but later tells Jack, "I looked into the eye of this island... and what I saw was beautiful." In Hearts and Minds Boone has a hallucination, seeing the monster and believing that it killed Shannon.
We finally see the monster in Exodus as a group of the survivors are heading to The Black Rock. On this occasion the monster is called The Security System by Danielle Rousseau, and Locke is almost taken by the monster. This was the first moment we were able to see the monster as a puff of black smoke.
Season 2
In the 23rd Psalm, Eko is confronted by the Monster while Charlie hides in a tree above him. Within the smoke images from Eko’s past can clearly be seen. The monster spares Eko, retreating into the jungle.
The creators of the show have also confirmed that the monster was seen at other times during season 2, but most people wouldn’t have been cognizant that they were looking at the monster.
