Season 1
Sun is a very traditional yet strong Korean woman. She has a talent for gardening and for using herbal medicines.
Through flashbacks, we learned that Sun's father was a powerful yet corrupt car manufacturer in Korea. When Jin, a busboy at the time, approached Mr. Paik about marrying Sun, he was offered a job with his future father-in-law. Sun was troubled about the amount of time Jin was spending working after their marriage, and became even more upset when she realized that Jin was working as an enforcer for her father. She secretly learned to speak English and formulated a plan to leave Jin in Sydney at the airport, but changed her mind at the last minute.
On the island, Sun planted a garden, and helps Jack by gathering herbal medicines. At first she is very submissive to her husband, but seems to grow more independent as time goes along.
Season 2
In flashbacks, we discovered that Sun had been an Art History major at Seoul National University. Concerned by her daughter's lack of a husband, Mrs. Paik arranged a meeting with a matchmaker who introduced Sun to Jae Lee, son of a wealthy hotel owner. They began to date, but Sun was crushed to learn that Jae Lee was only seeing her to cover his relationship with an American woman. Upon leaving the hotel, she bumped into Jin accidentally, apparently beginning their relationship. After their marriage, Sun and Jin were trying to conceive a child together, but were unsuccessful. They went to see a fertility specialist, who told the couple that the problem in conceiving was due to Sun's endometriosis. The doctor later told Sun privately that she was able to bear children, but Jin was infertile. We also learned that Jae Lee was the tutor Sun hired to teach her English before her planned escape from Jin.
Sun was attacked by Charlie while in her garden, in an attempt to cause confusion on the island by Sawyer, with Charlie acting as his accomplice. Shortly thereafter, Sun took a pregnancy test on the island and discovered she was pregnant. Jin attributes the pregnancy to a miracle. Sun and Jin accompanied Sayid on the boat trip around the island to the Others' faux camp. Her whereabouts at the end of Season 2 are unknown.
