Station 3: The Swan

Station 3, or The Swan, is actually nothing more than the Hatch, or to be more specific, the inside of the hatch. We first learned about Station 3 in s 2-ep3, Orientation, from Dr. Marvin Kandel, the narrator of the Station 3 orientation video.

In the video, Dr. Marvin Kandel introduces himself and identifies the film as the orientation film for station 3 of the Dharma Initiative. He next tells us that there are certain responsibilities associated with the station. Later, Dr. Kandel says:

"You and your partner are currently located in Station 3, or the Swan, and will be for the next 540 days. Station 3 was originally constructed as a laboratory where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island."

Due to The Incident, a button on an old computer terminal must be pushed every 108 minutes, after the Numbers have been entered. Station 3's entire existence seems to now revolve around the pushing of this button, but what happens if it isn't pushed is anybodys guess.

The orientation film has a copyright date of 1980 on it, so it seems safe to assume that a team of 2 people have been pushing this button since then, being replaced every 540 days by a new team. We can also deduce that Desmond wrecked on the island sometime in 2001, at the earliest. A man named Kelvin took him into Station 3 and showed him the video. It is unclear at this time what happened to Kelvin's original partner, and supposedly Kelvin died at some point after that.
