Season 1
Sayid had served in the Iraqi Republican Guard. He was trained to be a torturer by American forces, although he seems to struggle with this aspect of himself.
In flashbacks, we discovered that Sayid had fallen in love with Nadia, one of his prisoners and a former childhood friend. He helped her escape prison just before execution by killing his commanding officer and wounding himself, to make it appear that Nadia had overpowered them.
Sayid has been secretive about his past on the island. He is very skilled in fixing electronic equipment and fixes the plane's tranceiver to pick up the radio signal from Danielle. Sayid was captured by Danielle after he left the camp in shame from having tortured Sawyer about the missing asthma inhalers. Sayid stole Danielle's maps from her bunkers before escaping, and tried to make sense of them. He has earned Danielle's trust and she interacts more with him than with any other survivor. Sayid and Charlie tracked Danielle down after she kidnapped Aaron and convinced her to return the child. Sayid and Shannon grew very close, and began a romantic relationship.
Season 2
In flashbacks, we learned that Sayid had first been trained as a torturer by American forces in the first Gulf War. He had been captured and was forced to torture his commanding officer to get information pertaining to the whereabouts of a downed American pilot's remains. He vowed never to torture again, after being released by Sgt. Austen, Kate's father.
Sayid fixed the computer in the hatch after it was shot. Sayid consummated his relationship with Shannon, only to lose her shortly afterwards when she was accidentally shot and killed by Ana Lucia. Danielle brought Sayid to the jungle to show him the trap containing Henry Gale. Sayid tortured Henry to get information about his true identity, but Henry would not crack. Sayid, Ana and Charlie discovered Henry's hot air balloon in the jungle, along with the remains of the real Henry Gale buried nearby. Sayid realized that Michael had been compromised by the Others during the time he was away, and convinced Jack to let him sail to the other side of the island to scout the Others' camp. He took Sun and Jin with him. Once there, Sayid discovered the camp was a fake; his whereabouts at the end of Season 2 are unknown.
