Mystery Status: Unsolved
 Actual Polar Bears have been seen on the island, as well as many references to polar bears throughout the show. But how can a Polar Bear survive on a tropical island, and how did they get there to begin with?

Season 1
During a trek into the jungle to find a better place to transmit a radio signal, a polar bear came out of nowhere and charged the group of survivors. As they all began to scatter, Sawyer stood his ground, pulling out a handgun, which he had taken from the Marshal, and shooting the animal dead. Later in the season Walt was chased through the jungle by a polar bear, forcing Michael and Locke to work together to save him.
Walt carried a Spanish version of Faster Friends #1, a Green Lantern and Flash comic book that featured a polar bear on the cover. It is unclear whether the polar bear that chased Walt was already on the island, or if Walt used some kind of strange and mysterious power he has to make the creature exist. The comic book previously belonged to Hurley, prior to Walt finding it in the crash debris. Michael also gave a stuffed polar bear to Walt during a flashback sequence.
Season 2
During the Orientation video for The Swan, a shot of 2 polar bears fighting can be seen. The stuffed polar bears showed up again in a flashback scene where Charlie and his band were shooting a diaper commercial, and in a flashback of Hurley’s at the mental hospital, and man can be seen holding a stuffed polar bear while others are playing basketball.
The last mention of the polar bears in this season was on the blast door map where it said, STATED GOAL, REPATRIATION ACCELERATED DE-TERRITORIALIZATION OF URSUS MARITIMUS THROUGH GENE THERAPY AND EXTREME CLIMATE CHANGE. Ursus Maritimus is latin for Polar Bear.
Season 3
Tom says that at least one of the cages at the Hydra Station housed multiple bears, presumably polar bears. Locke has a vision of a polar bear attacking him just before he leaves his sweat lodge. Charlie and Locke find a tuft of polar bear fur as they are walking in the jungle searching for Mr. Eko. They find him unconscious in a cave with a polar bear. Also, a polar bear can be seen in a painting in Charles Widmore's office.
