Season 1

Jin is a very strong-willed and traditional Korean man. Although he initially tried to shelter himself and Sun from the other survivors, he has realized that they need to work together in order to survive, and has become an integral part of the group.

Through flashbacks, we learned that Jin had been a waiter in Korea when he first proposed to Sun. He went to her father for his blessing, and Mr. Paik offered him a job with his automotive company. He quickly discovers that the job was actually being an enforcer for Mr. Paik's more shady business dealings. He reluctantly goes along, out of fear of losing Sun if he disobeys her father. When Mr. Paik asks him to deliver watches to business associates in Sydney and Los Angeles, Jin's father tells him to escape while in America and try to find happiness with his wife.

Jin was very protective of his wife on the island, urging her to cover herself in a more modest fashion. He quickly took up the role of fisherman for the other survivors, perhaps using the knowledge he gained from his father. Although he cannot speak English and was shocked to learn that his wife could, he helped Michael rebuild the raft after the fire and began to communicate with him. He was on the raft when Walt was taken, and tried to fight off the Others.

Season 2

In flashbacks, we discovered more of Jin's story. He had been trying to elevate himself to a higher position in life by working at a hotel before he met Sun. He quit the job after seeing the hotel manager's disdain for people in Jin's class. He met Sun right after he left the position. We later learned that Sun and Jin had been trying to conceive a child together but were having difficulties. Jin felt that having a child would make their lives better; he hoped that Sun's father would give him a safer job if they gave him a grandchild. The fertility expert they consulted diagnosed Sun with endometriosis and said it would be impossible for her to conceive. However, the doctor later approached Sun and told her that the infertility problem was her husband's, and not hers.

Jin was the first member of the raft party to reach shore after they were attacked by the Others. Along with Sawyer and Michael, he met and travelled with the tail section survivors back to the beach camp. His English has been growing stronger under Sun's tutelage. Jin is thrilled to discover that Sun is expecting a baby, and attributes her pregnancy to a miracle. Jin and Sun accompany Sayid on Desmond's sailboat to the other side of the island, to scout out the Others' camp for Jack's group. However, although we see Sayid on the island exploring the camp, Jin and Sun's whereabouts are unknown.
