Season 1

Hurley is originally from the Los Angeles area. He had worked at Mr. Cluck's chicken restaurant when he won his lottery jackpot. He is an easy-going, laidback person.

In flashbacks, we discovered that Hurley won his fortune by using the numbers he heard at Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute from Lenny, another patient there. After winning the jackpot, Hurley experienced a series of misfortunes that led him to believe the numbers were cursed. He sought out Lenny, who led him to Martha Toomey, widow of Lenny's former Navy buddy who was living in Australia.

When Hurley discovered that Danielle had written the same numbers on her maps, he confronted her about them, and she more or less confirmed to him that the numbers were bad. When Hurley saw the numbers written on the outside of the hatch just before Locke was about to blow it open, he tried to stop him unsuccessfully. Hurley is a likeable man with many friends on the island. He constructed the golf course to give people something else to think about besides their predicament. He went on the dynamite gathering expedition and was traumatized by Arzt's unfortunate demise.

Season 2

Through flashbacks, we discovered that Hurley had kept his lottery winnings a secret for a short time after winning, because he was afraid that people would treat him differently if they knew he had money. Later, we learned the reason Hurley had been a patient at SRMHI was because he held himself responsible for the deaths of 23 people after a deck collapsed that he had walked onto. He had an imaginary friend at SRMHI named Dave, who tried to convince Hurley to escape, but Hurley resisted at the last minute and stayed inside to continue his recovery.

Hurley became romantically interested in Libby and started a courtship of her, before she was killed by Michael. He faced his food issues by first hoarding food from the hatch, and then getting rid of it all. He faced the return in his mind of Dave, and with Libby's help, avoided taking Dave's suggestion to jump off a cliff. He finally stood up to Sawyer and pummeled him, yelling at Sawyer every derogatory nickname Sawyer had slung at him. He was one of the group Michael traded to the Others, although Ms. Klugh allowed Hurley to return to the beach camp with a message for the other survivors, telling them that they could never go to the other side of the island.
