In s2-ep3 'Orientation', Jack and Locke are directed by Desmond to view the orientation film for the Dharma Initiative that was hidden in the living quarters of the hatch. While watching the film, it is apparent that the film had broken and been spliced together at several points, because of gaps in the motions and words of the narrator, Dr. Marvin Kandel. In the original film that was seen by Jack and Locke, Dr. Kandel says ".... When the alarm sounds, either you or your partner must input the code. It is highly recommended that you and your partner take alternating shifts. In this manner you will stay as fresh and alert [splice] utmost importance that when the alarm sounds the code be entered correctly, and in a timely fashion. Do not attempt to use the computer [splice] for anything [splice]. Congratulations, until your replacements arrive, the future of the project is in your hands. On behalf of the DeGroots, Alvar Hanso and all of us at the Dharma Initiative, thank you. Namaste. And good luck."
In s2-ep9 'What Kate Did', Locke shows the film to Michael and Eko after they return to the hatch. After watching the film, Eko gets up and leaves without saying anything. Locke later discovers Eko sitting at the table in the kitchen. Eko says that he has something that Locke should see, and tells him the story of The Book of Law from the Old Testament. Eko pushes the bible he recovered from the arrow station toward Locke, who opens it and discovers a piece of film inside, hidden in a cut out section of the book.
Locke and Eko splice the missing piece of film into its rightful place, and sit down to watch the movie. In it, they hear Dr. Kandel: "...When the alarm sounds, either you or your partner must input the code. It is highly recommended that you and your partner take alternating shifts. In this manner you will stay as fresh and alert [splice] utmost importance that when the alarm sounds the code be entered correctly, and in a timely fashion. Do not attempt to use the computer [splice] for anything else other than the entering of the code. This is its only function. The isolation that attends the duties associated with Station 3 may tempt you to try and utilize the computer for communication with the outside world. This is strictly forbidden. Attempting to use the computer in this manner will compromise the integrity of the project and worse, could lead to another incident. I repeat, do not use the computer for anything other than entering the code. Congratulations, until your replacements arrive, the future of the project is in your hands. On behalf of the DeGroots, Alvar Hanso and all of us at the Dharma Initiative, thank you. Namaste. And good luck."
There are still several pieces of film missing from the original movie, and their whereabouts and contents are as yet unknown.
