Finally, the question that Lost fans have been asking themselves all
year was answered when “Who the hell are Nikki and Paulo?” was
explained to viewers in "Expose". In a recap episode featuring our
favorite (or is that least favorite?) red shirts, "Expose" revisits the
first 80 days on the island with a nostalgic, yet slightly skewed, look
at the story through the eyes of two background survivors.
Surprisingly, the more interesting revelation may have been who Nikki
and Paulo were not. We now know that Desmond’s time travel did not
change the course of history, thereby replacing Rose and Bernard with
Nikki and Paulo. Another favorite fan speculation surrounded the
possibility that our new lovebirds were in fact members of the Others.
Sadly, Nikki and Paulo were neither replacements nor Others, but in
fact were two con artists who killed Nikki’s geriatric lover for his
hidden stash of diamonds.
Everything was going according to plan until the duo boarded the doomed Flight 815. At some point during the crash the diamonds disappeared. Once on the island, Nikki becomes obsessed in her search for the missing diamonds. *Writers note: Apparently, Nikki and Paulo’s search for the diamonds explains why we had not seen them through the course of the first two seasons.*
Suspecting that Nikki would leave him once she had the diamonds, Paulo attempts to hide the fact that he found them from her. Once she realizes his deception, Nikki uses a Medusa Spider to put Paulo into an eight hour paralyzed state resembling death. Nikki’s plan ended badly when the Medusa Spider’s pheromones attracted male spiders that bit Nikki, leaving her paralyzed as well.
After discovering the two bodies, the regular Losties believe them to be dead and make plans for a funeral. During this time, Charlie reveals to Sun that it was in fact he who attacked her and not the Others so long ago. To make matters worse, he reveals he did it under orders from Sawyer.
Never realizing that Nikki and Paulo are in fact alive, the survivors place them in a grave and proceed to bury them. The final irony comes when Nikki opens her eyes moments before having sand thrown on top of her. Will Nikki and Paulo survive or have Lost fans finally rid themselves of the most hated characters since Ana Lucia? We will have to wait until next week for that answer, but thankfully the outcome does not look good.
I found a few of the aspects of the show more interesting than Paulo and Nikki. Paulo found the Pearl station long before Locke and Eko dreamed their way upon it. Paulo went to hide his diamonds in the Pearl station bathroom when Ben and Juliet entered. They entered by a previously unknown entrance that appears to confirm the existence of tunnels. We also found out that Ben planned how to get Jack, Kate and Sawyer to come to him at the end of season 2. It was Juliet's actions that I found most intriguing. She entered the Pearl station with a walkie-talkie and left without it. She also provides a reason for why the hatch door was open. Did Juliet notice Paulo in the bathroom and leave the walkie for him to find? Was this her first attempt to betray Ben?
The use of the Medusa spider gave the ‘Christian lives’ theorists another piece of their conspiracy puzzle. We now have a plausible way in which Christian could have faked his own death. Perhaps Christian is part of a Dharma conspiracy to regain control of the island from the others. He would have knowledge of the spider’s existence and the capabilities of obtaining one. Couple this with the producers statement that we should be wondering what happened to Christian’s corpse, and we have a real conspiracy possibility.
What did you think? Was that Smokie we heard when the spiders attacked Nikki? Will Sawyer ever be liked? Can you believe we saw the Losties actually discussing life on Craphole Island?
