Desmond
What you need to know:
Desmond is first seen in s2-ep1, “Man of Science, Man of Faith”, waking up, showering, washing dishes, exercising, shooting up with some kind of medication, and keying the Numbers into an old computer terminal. Then we realize that all of those things were taking place inside the Hatch. Desmond has been living in Station Three and entering The Numbers into the terminal for an indeterminate period of time. He has had to follow the protocol on his own since his predecessor Kelvin died.
After Jack, Locke, and Kate enter the Hatch, Locke is held at gun point by Desmond, as he tries to get Jack to drop his pistol. During a heated exchange, the old computer terminal in the room is shot and damaged. Desmond is frantic and desperate to fix it.
Convinced that the world is going to end, Desmond frantically flees the hatch. Jack catches up with Desmond, and Desmond tells him the code, and to enter it every 108 minutes. Desmond then soon vanishes with his backpack into the jungle and has not been seen since.
Wanna know more?
Desmond’s accent suggests he is Scottish.
Desmond appeared Jack’s flashback in s2-ep3, “Orientation”. Desmond is in Dodger Stadium late one night, running a“tour de stadt” (running all the stairs in a stadium) at the same time Jack is doing the same. Jack tries to keep up with Desmond’s pace but falls and twists his ankle. Desmond said he was preparing for a solo sailing race around the world. Jack tells Desmond that it is hopeless and that Sarah will never walk again. Desmond pushes Jack to just believe in a miracle every now and then, asking Jack what it would be like if a miracle happened and Sarah was able to walk again. As Desmond leaves, he tells Jack, “Good luck, brother. See you in another life, yeah?”
During the race three years later, Desmond’s boat crashed on the island and, as he tells Jack, a man named Kelvin emerged from the jungle and took him back to the Hatch. Desmond watched as Kelvin input the numbers into a computer. When Desmond asked, “What was that all about?”, Kelvin just replied, “Just saving the world”.
Together, they continued the protocol set in place by The Dharma Initiative. The protocol consists of them taking shifts and entering the numbers into a computer every 108 minutes. This procedure, according to Desmond and an Orientation video he shows them, has been necessary since “The Incident”. Eventually, Kelvin died, and Desmond was left alone to do the work himself. Inside the research facility he has electricity, running water, food, music, and is seen injecting himself with some chemical.
When Kate, Locke and Jack enter the hatch, Desmond confronts them at gun point. He intervenes just before Jack is about to press a key labeled “Execute” on some kind of computer operating system.
He tells Jack and Locke that he was doing a race around the world when his boat was damage and he washed up to the shore of the island. A man named Kelvin came running out of the jungle and grabbed him, taking him to the Hatch and telling him about the numbers. Every 108 minutes, the numbers must be entered into the computer terminal.
When it appears that the computer can not be fixed, Desmond packs some personal belongings and flees the Hatch, running for his life without even knowing what he’s running from. The responsibility of pushing the button is now in the hands of our castaways.
Interesting Things to Know:
Desmond means “man of the world, society” in Celtic and Latin. The Anglo-Saxon meaning is “gracious defender” .
County Desmond was one of the five areas of ancient Ireland. Desmond is a Gaelic name originating from “Des-mumhan” which means Southern Munster. The area which once comprised Desmond is now Counties Cork and Kerry.
