Danielle Rosseau
What you need to know:
Danielle was part of a French science team that was on an expedition in 1988 when they visited the island to examine the source of the numbers transmission. At that time, she was seven months pregnant with Alex. After being on the island a couple of months, a “sickness” overcame her team and she was forced to kill them all. Around this same time, she changed the transmission of the numbers to transmit a distress recording she made. After she gave birth, The Others kidnapped Alex, and she has been missing ever since.
When Sayid leaves the survivors in s1-ep9, “Solitary”, he is captured by Danielle. Thinking that he is one of The Others, she holds him prisoner. When he insists that he does not know anything about her missing daughter, Alex, she electrocutes him. While holding Sayid prisoner, she tells him how she came to the island. Danielle was on a science expedition, which included several people including her husband Robert. Her science teamwere armed with rifles. When her team got infected she murdered her whole team, in order to make sure that when they got rescued others didn’t get infected.
Danielle has been on the island for 16 years, and has adapted in order to stay alive. She has become an expert at making traps, hiding, hunting and tracking. Later, Hurley seeks out Danielle to find out about the numbers he saw scribbled on one of her maps. She estimates the island is at least three days away from Tahiti.

Sayid and Danielle hear a roar outside of her camp, which she calls a security system. While she is out hunting it, Sayid steals her maps and notes about the island, grabs her other rifle, and escapes back to the other survivors. Before letting Sayid go, she tells him that her companions started to become sick, so she killed them one by one. She then gave birth to a daughter, Alex, and shortly afterwards a plume of black smoke appeared and The Others kidnapped Alex. After seeing that the papers Sayid stole contain the numbers, Hurley searches for Danielle. She tells him that the numbers were being broadcast on the radio, and she knows nothing about them.
After another plume appears in the distance, Danielle hears The Others whispering in the woods, and seeks out the survivors to inform them that the Others are coming, and they can either run, hide or die. She agrees to help Jack and Locke recover dynamite from the Black Rock in order to blow open the hatch in hopes of hiding the survivors inside. After she leads them to the dynamite, she returns to the camp, and confronts Claire. Claire sees the scratches on Danielle’s arm, and remembers that she was the one that scratched her. Danielle takes Aaron from Claire and disappears.
Sayid and Charlie pursue her and find that she is the cause of the black smoke, using the Others as a diversion so she could take Aaron. Danielle thought she could trade Aaron for her own child, Alex. However, it becomes apparent to Danielle that the others weren’t after Aaron, but Walt.Sayid and Charlie return Aaron to Claire. Some weeks later, Danielle finds Sayid and takes him to a trap she set. A man, Henry Gale, is inside, whom she claims is an Other. When Henry tries to escape, Danielle wounds him with an arrow. Sayid then takes him to the hatch to interrogate him.
Interesting Things to Know:
Danielle means “God is my judge” in Hebrew. She shares a last name with philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Like the 18th century English philosopher John Locke, Rousseau writes about social contracts.
