Walt's Abilities

In s1-ep14, Special, we see that there is something different about Walt. In a flashback scene, shortly before his mother dies, Walt is looking at a book about birds. He attempts to get Brian Porter's attention, to show him a specific bird in the book, and after being ignored, a bird suddenly slams into the window and falls dead.

Later, on the island, Walt and his father, Michael, are having an argument and Michael throws a comic book that Walt is looking at into the fire. The comic book has an image of a polar bear in it, and Walt storms off into the jungle. Shortly after this, Michael and Locke must save Walt from an attacking Polar Bear in the jungle.

We first learned that these incidents might not be coincidently when Brian Porter begs Michael to take Walt, after Walt's mother dies. Brian says to Michael, "There's something about him... Sometimes when he's around things happen. He's different somehow."

There is also a scene in s1-ep22, Born to Run, where Walt, knowing nothing at all about the Hatch Locke has found, touches Locke's arm and then says, "Don't open it. Don't open that thing."

At the end of season 1, Walt is targeted and taken hostage by the Others. It is unclear why they would specifically be interested in Walt, but one can only speculate that his "abilities" may have something to do with the reason why the Others would say...Give us the Boy!
