Want To Know More?
Season 1
During the first season we learn about the numbers from Hurley, who heard them from a man named Leonard Sims in the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute. After using these numbers and winning the lottery, Hurley began to notice very bad things happening to those around him, including his grandpa Tito’s sudden death.
After confronting Lenny back at Santa Rosa, Hurley heads to Australia to look for Sam Toomey, a buddy of Lenny’s from the Navy. Hurley learns that they heard the numbers being repeated while working at a listening post in the Pacific Ocean sixteen years ago.
On the island Hurley sees the numbers written on one of the maps Sayid brought back from the French chick. Hurley searches for Danielle to learn of her connection with the numbers. Danielle explains to him that her boat crashed 16 years ago after hearing a transmission of the numbers and changing course to investigate. She appears to be the first to agree with Hurley that the numbers are cursed.
In the season finale Hurley discovers that the numbers are also etched into the side of the hatch.
Season 2
In season two the numbers take the spot light after the castaways discover the hatch. They learn that there is a computer terminal in the hatch, Swan Station, and that the numbers must be entered into the terminal every 108 minutes (the sum of the numbers). The orientation film explains that this must be done due to an “Incident” of some kind that happened years ago.
By the end of season two we learn that there is an electro-magnetic buildup of some kind happening on the island, and entering in the numbers somehow releases the energy safely. We also learn that Desmond failed to enter the numbers in time, and supposedly caused the crash of flight 815.
The Lost Experience
During the summer, through the online game The Lost Experience, we learned a great deal more about the numbers. They are the core values of the Valenzetti equation, a mathmatical equation that supposedly has the power to predict the exact moment when the world will end. The Dharma Initiative was created in order to change the factors that would lead to humankind’s demise, and this will be proven when one of the core values is changed. It appears, as of today, that Dharma has yet to succeed in changing one of these core values. If any of these core values were ever changed, the success of the Dharma Initiative would be known by altering the message of the numbers on the radio tower to include the new value. It also still appears that even the Dharma Initiative does not know exactly what the numbers mean.
