The Hatch

At the very end of s1-ep11, All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues, Locke and Boone first found the mysterious piece of metal, buried beneath the ground, that became known as the hatch.

After digging a trench around the sides of the hatch, a set of numbers are revealed to be etched into the steel. Those numbers were 4 8 15 16 23 42. But what did six numbers have to do with a hatch in the ground?

Locke became obsessed with getting inside the hatch, sure that it held the answer to all of their questions, and was part of his personal destiny. But all of his attempts to break open the hatch failed, including his elaborate building of a trebuchet. The Hatch, or rather Locke's obsession with it, was also responsible, ultimately, for Boone's death.

Season 1 ended with the hatch finally being blown open with dynamite, and then we were forced to wait an entire summer to discover what might be inside.

So what was inside...why a man named Desmond, of course. In s2-ep1 , s2-ep2, and s2-ep3 we were told of how Desmond ended up shipwrecked on the island, only to be grabbed by a man named Kelvin, and taken into the hatch, which becomes known as Station 3 or The Swan. Inside Station 3, every 108 minutes (the sum of 4 8 15 16 23 and 42)the numbers must be entered, or....else? Locke and Jack are shown an orientation film explaining that an "incident" took place requiring this course of action, though no details were given to what that incident was. Desmond disappears into the jungle, and it becomes the responsibility of the castaways to keep on pushing the button

The Hatch has become the first LOST mystery to be solved, sort of. You see, the mystery was to discover what was inside the hatch, and we now know. Of course, that knowledge has given us the first new mysteries of season 2. The Swan, The Dharma Initiative or Hanso Foundation, and The Incident that took place.
