4x11 Initial Reactions 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
This thread discusses the Content article: 4x11 Initial Reactions

Well what an episode, definitely one of my favourites this season, after the pretty lousy one last week.

I wouldn’t say that the first few scenes were particular important to the episode, but we find out that Locke’s mother was pregnant at a young age, run over by a car, and decided that she couldn’t deal with having a child. She seemed to think it was very important to name him John though, almost like a life or death situation! That’s something I’d wondered about.

The next weird thing was that Ben said he had no idea where the cabin is, I found this a little odd since he took John to it before hand. He said Hugo’s the last one that saw it, as if it was a bunch of keys that had been lost. So we can probably deduce that the cabin moves.

Keamy and his crew arrive back, intent on getting revenge and torching the entire island. Something that we did later find out is that he couldn’t care less who he kills, just as long as he gets what he wants. He later kills that captain of the ship and the doctor all to prove a point, and get Frank to fly the helicopter.

Moving on to John’s vision, we meet Horace again. He tells John that he is building a cabin for him and his wife to find him, and he’ll find the cabin and Jacob. He also explains that if he can find him, he will find the cabin. Another little thing to note is that he says he’s been dead for 12 years (so this means in 1992 Ben gassed the DHARMA Initiative).

Richard Alpert, the mysterious never aging man, is now present in the hospital looking at John as a baby, this obviously shows that he knows something more about John. Perhaps Jacob told him about John. The next encounter is when John is a child. He is playing backgammon when he is greeted by Richard, who runs a ‘special school’. What was interesting is the test that he performed. I’m not quite sure which object, if any would pass him. It was interesting that he picked up the knife, as this relates to his hunting on island.

Back on island Locke is digging through the mass grave of the DI workers, to find Horace’s body. When he does he pulls out a set of blue prints, including a map of where the cabin was located. This is contradictory to the idea that the cabin moves!

On the Freighter the captain agrees to let Sayid sneak the tender to ferry people back from the beach.

Now here’s something that I found VERY interesting…John is doing physiotherapy or the such-like after the incident with his father, then he is put in a wheelchair and who is pushing it, but non other than Matthew Abaddon, the mysterious man who was in a brief with Naomi a while back, seemingly in charge of the mission. He tells John that he should go on a walkabout! My crazy question is did the plane crash all to get John on the island?!

On the island again, at the beach a helicopter fly’s across and a backpack hurtles to the ground. Inside is a satellite phone, with the tracking map up. Jack assumes that they want them to follow, but did Frank do it so that they would be able to stay out of harms way? I’m sure we will see a discussion about it amongst the Losties in the next episode.

Finally the turning point of the episode, when they finally find the shack. John enters to see Christian, who says he can speak on behalf of Jacob. As for how he came into this position I have no ideas. Then Claire is revealed to us, but I’d hazard a guess that she is dead, if she is indeed with Christian. The chances of the other Losties seeing her again are pretty slim, and the reason Christian said not to tell them, is because she wasn’t actually alive. Anyhow Locke comes out of the shack and says we need to ‘move’ the island! Now how the hell are they going to manage that?

Theories & discussion welcome!

AS usual, a very nice write up Luke.

I liked this epi a lot, as well, however a couple of things are bothering me.

As you mentioned, the island has to be moved. I hope that TPTB are very careful and clever with this one. Since islands don't float, we can hardly anticipate a physical relocation.

Why on Earth would Sayid want to bring people to that deathtrap of a freighter? Granted, he doesn't know about Keamy killing the doctor and the captain, but still....... No engines, no radio, no kitchen, no way. After all, he had to sneak his way off. How can he freely start loading up the boat with the survivors?

Hi, I'm new but have to say the site looks great.

On the theory front everyone seems to have moved passed the black rock (the ship). I find it hard to believe that it's only part is explosives, John's pop kicking the bucket and the ships log leading whitmore to the search.

The ship is proof positive that the island has been grabbing peeps for a while now. There is was a lot of speculation about who jacob was (i.e. Loche or old man Sheppard) the one scene with jacob admittedly bore a resembalence to both and I can't argue that Sheppard said he could speak for Jacob, but am I crazy or was Jacob's clothing mid 17th or even early 18th century in that shadowy scene? Additionally Jacob is a biblical name and would have been very common in the black rock's hay day.

I won't presume how they move the island but I have to say that I believe the island (whatever force it embodies) IMO seems to assymilate those stranded/died (but we have only seen a couple examples of this!?!).

I dunno, just wondering if anyone thinks there is something to this...
