In s2-ep13 "The Long Con", we delve into what may become the most intriguing LOST mystery of all. Sun is attacked by what appears to be one of the others. The commotion of her attack draws the attention of Sawyer and Kate. When the two find Sun, she is semi-conscious, and Sawyer carries her off to Jack for medical attention. The main focus of the episode is on Jack and Sawyer, in their continuing battle for supremacy on the island and for Kate. The entire plot of s2-ep13 revolves on Sawyer’s attempts to gain control of the weapons in the hatch, and control of the group from Jack, by the use of a con. It is revealed that Charlie was the one who attacked Sun, and he did it under the orders of Sawyer.

Unbeknownst to the rest of the survivors, Sayid was attempting something far more sinister than Sawyer’s plan to steal the weapons. Below is from the transcript of the episode:

[We see Sayid shucking coconut husks on a stake. Hurley approaches.]

HURLEY: Hey, man. You gonna put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em both up?

[Sayid doesn't respond]

Although Sayid and Hurley continue their conversation, the true nature of what Sayid was doing with the coconuts was never revealed. When stranded on a deserted island, a coconut has many conventional uses. A coconut can be used for milk, or as a food source. You can also use one to make cups, bowls, or assorted digging or scooping tools. But why was Sayid, of all people, working with coconuts?

On SWLS, ‘mollyh’ finally asked the question that everyone was thinking, but no one had the guts to ask. That was, “What was Sayid doing with the coconuts?" (Actual post hee hee)

Again, some think that Sayid may be using the coconuts for their previously listed conventional uses. Some extremists even think Sayid may have delved into the lucrative bikini top business. But LOST purists know the truth: Sayid is developing weapons. Let’s look at Sayid’s history. He is a confessed member of the Iraqi Army’s Republican Guard. He is a self-proclaimed torturer. Sayid has tortured two people on the island already in the first 50+ days. He has been previously associated with a terrorist organization. And, and most importantly, his lover Shannon was gunned down by an Infidel (Ana-L). Who knows what else Sayid could be planning?

Upon viewing S2E13 "The Long Con", the United Nations (UN) has decided to place sanctions on the island. We learn in a later episode that Hurley is hoarding Ranch dressing. Could he have advanced knowledge of the sanctions?

The UN has reportedly uncovered a plan by Sayid to develop Coconuts of Mass Destruction (CMD’s). Plans have already been devised to strategically bomb the island. Unknown sources confirm that “the hatch and the cave have already been scouted”.

Although the survivors have no knowledge of Sayid’s motives, this may end up being their best chance for survival. After the initial strike, the UN will occupy the island, and rescue the survivors of the bombings.

Although no CMD’s have ever actually been recovered, this ‘mystery’ remains unsolved. Who knows how many CMD’s Sayid may have buried in the sand of the island? And, if you are a skeptic, remember this: Have you ever been hit in the head with a coconut? It hurts. A lot.
