Season 1
Boone's mother Sabrina married Shannon's father Adam Rutherford when he was 11. He spent the majority of his adult life trying to protect Shannon, mostly from herself. He had been in love with Shannon even though they were step-siblings.
Through flashbacks, we learned that Boone had gone to Australia to rescue Shannon from an abusive boyfriend. After paying off the boyfriend, Boone expected Shannon to return to the US with him, and was shocked to learn that he had been set up by Shannon in order to get money for herself. After Brian ran off with the money, Shannon went to Boone's hotel and seduced him.
Boone tried to be helpful on the island, although his clumsiness got in the way. He claimed to have been a lifeguard but couldn't swim strongly enough to save Joanna. He said he was trained in CPR but was performing it incorrectly on Rose. He seemed to find his place when he was befriended by Locke. The two found the hatch and tried unsuccessfully to open it. After Locke related a dream of a yellow Beechcraft, Boone and Locke discovered the plane. Boone climbed up into it and used the radio to send a message, which was heard by Bernard. The plane fell from the treetops, causing massive injuries to Boone, and he died during the first season.
