The Blast Door Map PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 June 2006
On Season 2, Episode 17, the Lost creative team gave us probably the most revealing clue yet, to the mysteries happening on this island. In the episode John Locke is pinned underneath the blast door inside the hatch, while Henry Gale is crawling through the ventilation shaft, trying to reach the computer in time to enter the numbers. Suddenly the power goes out, and the room Locke is in is re-illuminated by a black-light. He looks astonished as he gazes at a large map drawn on the closed Blast door. The map was apparently drawn with special ink allowing it to only be seen with a black-light.
The images to the left are different incarnations of this map. The first image is the original screen cap from the episode. The second image was enhanced by fans at The Tail Section to make it easy to read the text. The final image is a map I made using the enhanced version, replacing the hand written text on the map with typed text. Almost all of the maps contents have been determined, but what they all mean could take months and a great deal of speculation and luck to determine anything substantial. Clicking on any of the images to the right will give you a larger, more detailed view of the maps.

Things worth mentioning

Dharmatel: The term Dharmatel appears several times on the map, usually in reference to an intranet, relays, or servers.

Mangus Hanso: This names appears on the map, apparantly at the Black Rock saying "Final resting place of Mangus Hanso." Obviously some relation to Alvar, but how is not yet known. Could also be hinting at a 1965 book titled Magus, about a man on an island who gets sucked into the mind-bending "godgame" of a mysterious recluse.

Cerberus: Cerberus was the mythological creature, a 3 headed dog, who guarded the gates of hell. It was Cerberus' job to ensure no living got into hell and no dead got out. Cerberus is also connencted to some research projects that attempted to connect the human mind to a computer. Based on the text on the map, it could be speculated the Cerberus is the name the mapmaker has given to The Monster.

D.I.H.G.: The map also refers to D.I.H.G. Obviously Dharma Initiative are the first two letters, but what could the H.G. stand for? Speculation says Hanso Group ?

AH/MDG: On the map in several places it mentions AH/MDG. AH could be referring to Alvar Hanso, but what could MDG mean? Possibly [ something ] De Groot?

Latin: The cursive phrases written on the map are in latin. As is the text Ursus Maritimus, which means Polar Bear!

Valencetti: This could also be Valenzetti. For the first spelling, it has been suggested that it could be two words, Valence & TTI, written next to one another. Valence model is a theory that relates probability and incentive of success to motivation. This would fit in with the soceital aspect of DHARMA research. The TTI (Task & Technology Interaction) is "expressed as a collection of testable propsitions that provide useful guidelines for determining technological support features for a given task situation". What exactly that means is still up in the air. This LINK may provide an explaination of TTI.
The other spelling, with the z, could be a name. If you had searched google on Wednesday evening, only one result appeared. It was a log of recent domain names registered the previous Sunday. The domains are: enzovalenzetti.com, thevalenzettiequation.com, valenzetti.com, valenzettiequation.com. These domains were registered by a shadowy entity called "Domain Discreet," which is suspected to be a broker for companies buying sites on the sly for one reason or another. This may or may not be related to the Lost map.
