Cerberus Is One Of It's Names...... PDF Print E-mail

monster.jpgRecently, at Comic Con, the producers were asked, "Can I call the monster Cerberus?"  Damon says..."That's Dharma's name for it, maybe. Cerberus is one of it's names."  The fan went on to ask if the monster seems like it represents judgment. Damon replied that the whole deal with the monster will be definitely answered.  So what could the answer be? There were two things I found very interesting about the producers' comments at Comic Con......1.)  They gave us a link to a region that has not really been a "hot spot" for either the show or The Lost Experience.  The Orchid filmstrip was supposedly found in an abandoned warehouse in Norway and salvaged to the best of their abilities.  Why Norway?  Why not Coppenhagen or Sri Lanka, or another well-known "Lost" city?  The second interesting comment was the that "Cerberus" was ONE of the names for the apparition that we call, "Smokie".  I think it's time for a little "Nancy Drew-ing"!!

I initially started my seach on Norway.  Ever since the end of Season 2, I have been researching myths and legends from all over the world to try and figure out the mystery behind the Four-Toed Statue.  I have searched Greek, Roman, Korean, Polynesian, Australian, Thai, and many other regions looking for that one person of significance with four toes.  I've been led to many dead ends.  But with the mention of Norway, I decided to look into Viking myths and legends and see if we have been led, once again, to find some sort of clue or evidence.  This is what I found:

A Draugr is a corporeal undead from Norse mythology.  The original meaning of the Norse word is ghost and they were believed to live in the graves of dead Vikings, being the body of the dead.

From Wikipedia:

All draugar possess superhuman strength, the ability to increase their size at will and the unmistakable stench of decay. They were also noted for the ability to rise from the grave as wisps of smoke. The draugar slew their victims through various methods including crushing them with their enlarged forms, devouring their flesh, and drinking their blood. Animals feeding near the grave of a draugr were often driven mad by the creature's influence.  Some draugar were able to leave their dwelling place, the burial mound, and visit the living during the night. Such visits were universally horrible events, and often ended in death for one or more of the living.

From this, I see some similarities.  For one, the walking dead sounds a lot like Yemi and Christian Shepard, both of whom have their remains on the island.  There's the ablility to have superhuman strength, increasing size, and appearing as wisps of smoke.  The animals being driven mad could apply to the polar bears.  But most interesting is the fact that they are able to visit the living at night and the visits resulted in death--which is what we witnessed with Eko and would have seen with Jack and Hurley, had they been given enough time with the demon they were chasing.

Were the producers trying to lead us in a certain direction by giving us Norway and saying that there are other names to call the smoke monster?  I believe they are giving us things to look into and little pieces to keep all of us busy, but I can't say for sure that THIS is what they were sending us to find.  Hopefully, in Season 4, we will be given more clues to let us know what this island is, who is running it, and why.
